What is a personal year number?

A personal year number is a numerology number that changes every year. It is calculated by adding your birth day, your birth month and the current calendar year, then reducing the total to a single digit. Numerologists describe the numbers 1 to 9 as a nine-year cycle, with each year carrying its own traditional theme.

A number that changes each year

Most numerology numbers, such as the life path and birthday numbers, are fixed at birth. The personal year number is different: it moves forward by one each calendar year, running through a cycle from 1 to 9 and then starting again. It is often used to describe the general theme or tone of a given year.

How to calculate it

Add three things together, reduce each to one digit, then reduce the total:

  1. Birth day: the day of the month you were born
  2. Birth month: its number from 1 to 12
  3. Current year: the calendar year in question

Example: someone born on 14 March, looking at 2026.

  • Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
  • Month: March → 3
  • Year: 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
  • Total: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9

That person is in a personal year 9 in 2026, and moves to a personal year 1 in 2027.

The nine-year cycle and its traditional themes

  • Personal year 1: beginnings, fresh starts and planting seeds
  • Personal year 2: patience, connection and quieter growth
  • Personal year 3: expression, creativity and social energy
  • Personal year 4: structure, effort and building foundations
  • Personal year 5: change, movement and new experiences
  • Personal year 6: home, responsibility and care
  • Personal year 7: reflection, study and inner work
  • Personal year 8: achievement, momentum and visible results
  • Personal year 9: completion, release and closing a chapter

These are the traditional descriptions used in numerology, offered as themes for reflection rather than forecasts.

Personal year, month and day

Numerologists also break the year into personal months (personal year plus the calendar month) and personal days. These are often described as finer layers within the larger yearly theme.

How it fits with the rest of a profile

A personal year number is usually read alongside the fixed numbers, the life path and birthday numbers, and, in a combined reading, alongside astrological timing such as transits. At nu astrology, the Personal Life Report looks at the years ahead using both the birth chart and the numbers from the birth date.

Frequently asked questions

When does a personal year start?

Most numerologists start it on 1 January, while some begin it on the birthday. Both approaches are widely used.

What is a personal year 1?

The first year of the nine-year cycle, traditionally described as a year of beginnings and fresh starts.

What is a personal year 9?

The final year of the cycle, often described as a year of completion and reflection before a new cycle begins.

Is the personal year the same for everyone?

No. It depends on your birth day and month, so people born on different dates are in different personal years at the same time.
